How to Store J507 Welding Electrodes After Opening

J507 welding electrodes should be immediately sealed and stored in an insulated box at 100-150℃ after opening, or stored in a moisture-proof sealed container with desiccant to prevent moisture absorption and welding defects. Because they are low-hydrogen sodium-based alkaline welding electrodes, they are extremely sensitive to moisture; strict moisture control is essential after opening.

1. Immediate Sealing and Storage (Preferred Method) Unused J507 welding electrodes should be immediately transferred to a moisture-proof sealed box with desiccant such as silica gel. If short-term use is required, they can be stored in an insulated box at 100-150℃ and used as needed. The sealed container should be labeled with the opening date for easy tracking of the expiration date.

2. On-site Usage Management: When welders retrieve welding rods, they should place them in an insulated container at 50-60℃. The container lid should be closed immediately after use to prevent moisture intrusion. Welding rods should not be stored in the insulated container for more than 4 hours. After this time, they must be returned to the insulated container or re-dried. The quantity retrieved each time should be limited to the amount used per shift to minimize exposure risk.

3. Long-term Storage Recommendations:

Environmental Requirements: Warehouse temperature 10-15℃, relative humidity <=50%, equipped with a thermometer and hygrometer for daily recording.

Stacking Specifications: Storage racks should be at least 300mm off the ground and away from walls. Label welding rods by batch and specification to avoid mixing.

Number of Stacking Layers: No more than 3 layers for rods φ4.0mm and below to prevent the coating from cracking under pressure.

4. Reuse and Disposal Standards

Re-drying should not be repeated more than 3 times; excessive baking will cause the flux coating to deteriorate and become ineffective. For opened welding electrodes stored for more than 6 months, it is recommended to conduct a process re-inspection before use. Welding electrodes showing white frost, core corrosion, black spots on the flux coating, or peeling off in large pieces should be discarded immediately.

Safety Warning: Welding with damp J507 welding electrodes will cause an increase in the hydrogen content of the weld, which can easily lead to delayed cracking and, in severe cases, structural component fracture accidents.
